How many matches will be played at the 2026 World Cup?

With more teams participating, the number of matches naturally increases. This will be evident in the 2026 World Cup, where 104 matches are scheduled, marking a significant rise of 40 matches compared to recent editions. This increase promises a wealth of additional football action.

Such an expansion is likely to be warmly welcomed by viewers, as it means live matches will be broadcast continuously from morning until night, enhancing the tournament’s appeal.

From a practical standpoint, the format will maintain the four-team structure per group, as seen in previous tournaments. In Qatar, each of the eight groups featured six matches, totaling 48 matches during the group phase. In contrast, the 2026 World Cup will see this number rise to 72 matches for the group stage alone. Therefore, viewers can expect an additional 24 games to enjoy.

During the group stage in Qatar, the matches were spread over 13 days, typically featuring four matches daily. This scheduling pattern will continue into the 2026 tournament, with the exception of the initial two days, which will have two matches each. The final four days of the group stage will host six matches per day, extending the first phase of competition to a total of 16 days.
