HBJ article

Philippe Tanguy first got into the events business when the Super Bowl rolled into Houston in 2004. Since then, he’s built up his Houston-based company, On Point Events, to serve clients all over the world at some of the biggest sporting events. A basic Super Bowl package through his company in 2017 cost more than $5,000.

How much has the Super Bowl changed since you started your business in 2004? There are more sideshow festivities now around the Super Bowl than when I started. It’s a better event now from a fan’s perspective, but it’s also at a higher price point than 2004.

What does your company do around the Super Bowl? We work with fans, corporations and affluent individuals. Our company helps clients walk through the perfect weekend based on their budget and what they’re trying to accomplish. There are so many more options now, so we help them see the forest, not just the trees.

You’re based in Houston. Is it less of a challenge to book events here? Yes. Thankfully, we got to sleep at home at night. Normally, we’re always on the road. We have a lot of fantastic hotels and event spaces in Houston, which allows for more things to happen. It’s a great place to host a Super Bowl. Houston’s done a good job setting up Discovery Green and making that a walkable experience – that’s been a success in other cities.

What’s Houston missing for the perfect Super Bowl experience? Obviously, the Texans. We are missing the higher-end hotel inventory. It’s surprising we don’t have a W Hotel – they opened one in Austin, but why not put one in Houston? I’m not sure. We wish we had a Ritz-Carlton and other international brands that people associate with luxury.

How did the Dallas Cowboys playoff loss affect your business? The Cowboys kept ticket prices high. Those prices slowed down a lot of sales to individuals who were not necessarily Cowboys fans but wanted to come to the Super Bowl. For the past four to five weeks, we haven’t been able to capture those sales to the people who got priced out. Now those people have made alternative arrangements.

What percentage of your company’s revenue does that Super Bowl make up? It’s probably 15 to 20 percent of our revenue. depending on the year. The Masters (Tournament) will probably be the bigger event for us this year. We also do World Cup and the Summer Games along with award shows and movie premieres. It’s an off year for us after the Summer Games that past year.

How much does a client typically spend with your company? There’s not necessarily an average, but the starting price for a basic package with transportation, hotel and tickets to the game is around $5,500 a person. That’s up from this past year. I don’t know if that will be a trend going forward. If the economy is doing well, it’ll keep trending upwards.

How has the oil slump affected local clients? A lot of local people have been restrained spending wise. The timing of the oil slump and the Super Bowl is unfortunate. Some local companies have decided not to take clients to the game itself, but they’ll take them to some of the events leading up to the game. Others have gone with more affordable seating options.
