The 2026 World Cup will feature an expanded lineup of 48 teams, marking the largest tournament in history. It will be hosted jointly by Mexico, USA, and Canada, spanning three nations for the first time ever.
Teams from UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, AFC (Asian Football Confederation), OFC (Oceania Football Confederation), and CAF (Confederation of African Football) will each conduct their qualifying rounds to determine which nations earn a spot in the tournament.
The distribution of qualifying spots is as follows: AFC (8), CAF (9), CONCACAF (6), CONMEBOL (6), OFC (1), UEFA (16).
These allocations cover 46 of the 48 teams participating. The remaining two spots will be determined through a playoff involving six teams.
Each confederation, except UEFA, will contribute one team, along with an additional team from the host confederation. Two more teams will qualify based on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.
