The Academy of Country Music (ACM) was founded in 1964 in Los Angeles, California as the Country & Western Music Academy and was created by early Western performers as a way to expand country music in the western states. In 1965, a board of directors was formed to govern the Academy which earned further support from original artists such as Merle Haggard, Roger Miller, and Buck Owens.
The Academy first hosted its Country Music Awards show in 1966 to honor the industry’s accomplishments during the previous year. It was the first country music awards program held by a major organization, propelling country music into the public spotlight for the first time. The Academy also promoted its efforts to broaden the horizons of the country music industry by sponsoring the “Country Music Caravan” in Los Angeles and beginning its history of charitable endeavors with a “Concern for Prisoners of War” benefit concert.
The awards show hit the airwaves in 1972, broadcast for the first time on national television with the ABC network. Under different supervision, the show moved to the NBC network and then finally to CBS where it remains today. In 2003, the ACM Awards ceremony left Los Angeles for the first time and moved to Las Vegas, where it is now currently being held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. 2008 was an excellent year for the Academy, having partnered with Dick Clark Productions as producers of the awards show. The 43rd Academy of Music of Country Music Awards was broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in high-definition for the first time and ratings skyrocketed. As country music continues to reach an increasingly wider audience, the Academy of Country Music also continues its mission to promote and support the industry from coast to coast.
Renowned country music artist Reba McEntire has hosted the ceremony for 11 years running. At the most recent 44th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, popular artist Carrie Underwood was bestowed the top honor of Entertainer of the Year over veteran male performers George Strait, Kenny Chesney, and Keith Urban. The award was determined for the second year in a row by popular vote during the show at CBS.com instead of being determined as it had been in the past by the performer who sold the most concert tickets during the previous 12 months. The ACM continues to boost ratings and strives to make the event more interactive for fans. By changing its format for deciding the winners, viewers are now allowed to vote on their preference for the Entertainer of the Year and Best New Artist awards. Taylor Swift is another newcomer to the country music business, and her overwhelming success in 2008 contributed to her second album “Fearless” being named Album of the Year.
